In a monumental political shift, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement, made at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday evening, follows the defection of 17 PDP lawmakers in the state assembly last week.
Governor Fubara cited the need to move “to where it is better for Rivers State,” praising President Bola Tinubu’s support in navigating the state’s recent political crisis. His move was reportedly a key part of a peace deal brokered by President Tinubu to resolve the protracted feud with former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The governor’s defection marks a seismic change in Nigeria’s political geography. With Fubara’s move, the APC now controls all six states in the oil-rich South-South geopolitical zone for the first time, leading to concerns among some analysts about the country’s drift toward a one-party-dominated landscape.
The Rivers State PDP Chairman, Hon. Robinson Ewor, stated he would not follow the governor, underscoring the internal fractures within the party.
