US Congress Urges Secretary of State to Press Nigeria Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Prolonged Detention

Members of the United States Congress have formally called on the Secretary of State to engage the Nigerian government over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a bipartisan letter, the lawmakers expressed growing concern over what they described as a prolonged and politically motivated legal process against Kanu, who has been held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021.

The legislators urged the State Department to raise the matter with Abuja through diplomatic channels, citing human rights obligations and Nigeria’s commitments to fair trial standards under international law.

Kanu’s legal team and family have long maintained that his detention violates his fundamental rights. His case has drawn significant attention from diaspora groups, human rights organizations, and foreign governments.

The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official response to the congressional request. CDA News Nigeria will continue to follow developments on this story.
