CAN Sets June 14 as ‘Black Sunday’ — Churches to Wear Mourning as Insecurity Spirals Across Nigeria

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, a “Black Sunday” — a solemn day of mourning and protest against the worsening state of insecurity across the country.

CAN’s leadership announced the directive in a statement urging all member churches and Christian faithful nationwide to dress in black as a visible symbol of grief over the unrelenting attacks on communities, killings of worshippers, and the abduction of civilians, particularly in the Middle Belt and northern regions.

“The blood of innocent Nigerians is crying to God. We can no longer keep silent while our people are slaughtered.” — CAN leadership statement
The association called on the federal government to take decisive action, warning that the continued failure to protect lives and property was eroding public trust in the state’s capacity to govern.

CAN also urged Christian leaders to use the occasion to pray for the nation and demand accountability from security agencies and elected officials at all levels of government.

The declaration has drawn wide support from pastors and church bodies across the country. CDA News Nigeria will provide full coverage of the Black Sunday observance and government response.
