Police Detain INEC Official, Quiz Wike’s Aide Lere Olayinka

Abuja — Operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) have detained an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) electoral officer and questioned the Senior Special Assistant on Social Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, over an alleged unauthorised disclosure of classified voter information .

The investigation follows a petition by a security aide to the INEC chairman, alleging criminal conspiracy, cyber intimidation, and the leaking of confidential documents connected to Nollywood actor and politician Emeka Ike .

The controversy began when Olayinka posted on X that Ike had transferred his voter registration from Imo State to the FCT on May 15, 2026, questioning his eligibility to contest for a House of Representatives seat in Abuja . He attached screenshots containing Ike’s personal data, which critics alleged were sourced from INEC’s restricted administrative portal .

According to police sources, the detained AMAC electoral officer accessed Ike’s details after protesters blocked the INEC office on May 29, 2026 . The officer then contacted Olayinka via Facebook Messenger before forwarding the classified voter document through WhatsApp .

INEC has denied any external hacking, stating that preliminary findings indicate misuse of legitimate internal access credentials by an authorised official .

While the electoral officer remains in custody, Olayinka was granted administrative bail after questioning . He confirmed he honoured the police invitation, stating he was unaware the documents were classified .

The Department of State Services (DSS) has also launched a parallel investigation into the incident.
