Senate President Godswill Akpabio has petitioned security agencies over a fake news report that falsely quoted him responding to former US President Donald Trump’s comments about Nigeria. Akpabio described the viral publication as “mischievous” and a calculated attempt to create diplomatic friction.
Speaking during plenary, Akpabio clarified that the Senate has not officially discussed Trump’s statements and that only the Presidency can respond to such international matters. He warned that such fabricated reports could damage Nigeria’s international relations and undermine the National Assembly’s integrity.
The Senate President has asked the Cybercrimes Unit of the Police and the Department of State Services to identify and apprehend those responsible for the false publication.
