FG extends evacuation screening for Nigerians in South Africa to June 10

The Federal Government has extended the evacuation screening exercise for Nigerians willing to return home from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) said the deadline has been moved from June 5 to June 10, 2026, to allow more registered citizens complete the process.

“The extension follows requests from affected Nigerians in Gauteng, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal who faced logistical challenges,” the statement read.

Hundreds of Nigerians have reportedly lost properties and businesses in the latest wave of anti-foreigner violence in Johannesburg and Pretoria. The FG had earlier launched a voluntary evacuation portal, with over 1,200 registrations so far.

Returnees will be airlifted in batches, with the first flight expected by mid-June. NiDCOM advised applicants to stay vigilant and avoid non-essential movements in high-risk areas.
