Ijaw communities protest, disrupt operations at Delta flow station

Operations at several flow stations in Delta State have been disrupted following protests by Ijaw communities over alleged neglect and environmental degradation.

The protesters, mostly women and youths from communities in Warri South-West and Burutu Local Government Areas, barricaded access roads to the flow stations on Tuesday, forcing oil companies to shut down production.

“We are tired of gas flaring that destroys our farmland and fishing waters while the government and oil firms look away,” a community leader told CDA News Nigeria.

The protesters also demanded the immediate implementation of memoranda of understanding signed years ago, including provision of electricity, potable water, and employment for indigenes.

Security operatives were deployed to the area to prevent escalation, but no violence was reported as of press time. A delegation from the state government has reportedly been sent to engage the communities.

The oil firms affected have yet to issue official statements. Industry analysts warn that prolonged shutdowns could impact Nigeria’s crude oil output.
