The Labour Party (LP) has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its exclusion from the forthcoming Enugu State by-election.
The by-election, scheduled for June 27, 2026, is for the Enugu South Urban State Constituency seat, which became vacant following the demise of the incumbent lawmaker.
In a suit filed before a Federal High Court in Enugu on Tuesday, the Labour Party argued that INEC unlawfully omitted its name and logo from the list of participating political parties despite fulfilling all statutory requirements.
“We duly notified INEC of our intention to field a candidate and complied with every provision of the Electoral Act. Exclusion without explanation is a violation of our rights,” the party’s counsel told CDA News Nigeria.
INEC is yet to respond publicly to the suit. However, sources within the commission suggested the exclusion might be tied to unresolved internal leadership disputes within the Labour Party at the state level.
The court has fixed June 15 for the hearing of the case. Political analysts say the outcome could set a precedent for future electoral disputes.
