Three Die as Warri-Itakpe Train Derails in Kogi

Three persons have been confirmed dead following the derailment of a passenger train on the Warri-Itakpe rail line in Kogi State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning around the Ajaokuta area when the train, which was traveling from Warri to Itakpe, reportedly lost balance and veered off the tracks.

According to the Federal Ministry of Transportation, several others sustained varying degrees of injury and have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

“The derailment resulted in the tragic loss of three lives. Emergency responders are on ground conducting rescue and recovery operations,” a ministry spokesperson said.

The cause of the derailment is yet to be determined, but preliminary reports suggest possible track failure or excessive speed. An investigation has been launched.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended operations on the Warri-Itakpe route pending the outcome of an integrity test on the tracks.

The NRC management expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured that medical bills for the injured will be covered.
