The United Nations has raised serious concern over the escalating wave of killings, abductions, and banditry across Nigeria, calling on the Federal Government to take urgent measures to protect civilians.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the world body condemned recent attacks in the North-West, North-Central, and parts of the South-East, where scores of people have been killed or kidnapped for ransom.
“We are alarmed by the increasing frequency and brutality of attacks on civilians, including women and children. The violence must stop,” the statement read.
The UN also expressed worry over the humanitarian impact, noting that thousands have been displaced and many communities cut off from basic services.
It urged the Nigerian government to strengthen security sector governance, ensure accountability for human rights violations, and prioritize the safe release of all abducted persons.
The Federal Government has yet to issue an official response to the UN’s alarm. Rights groups have echoed the call, demanding immediate action.
