Senegal are champions of Africa once again after a tense and dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over Morocco in the AFCON 2025 final in Rabat on Sunday.
The match was decided by a second-half extra-time goal from midfielder Pape Gueye, but the closing moments of regular time were overshadowed by major controversy.
Deep into injury time, a penalty was awarded to Morocco, prompting several Senegal players to walk off the pitch in protest and triggering clashes among supporters. After a delay of nearly 20 minutes, play resumed, and Moroccan star Brahim Diaz saw his spot-kick saved, sending the match into extra time.
Gueye’s decisive strike thereafter secured Senegal’s second continental title, adding to their historic first win in 2021.
