Kano, Nigeria — A High Court has adjourned the trial of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and his sons in the alleged N1.35 billion fraud case following the absence of one of the defence counsel.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the court was unable to proceed with the hearing after the defence lawyer failed to appear. The trial judge subsequently fixed a new date for the continuation of proceedings, urging all parties to ensure their readiness at the next sitting.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Lamido and his sons over allegations bordering on fraud and the alleged unlawful handling of public funds. The defendants have denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
“The matter is hereby adjourned due to the absence of counsel. Parties are expected to be present on the next adjourned date for the continuation of trial,” the trial judge ruled.
The case has remained one of the high-profile corruption trials before the court. Proceedings are expected to resume on the adjourned date, when both the prosecution and defence will continue presenting their arguments and evidence.
