PDP Convention 2026: Ikpeazu Declares ‘Moment of Reckoning’

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Former Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention a “moment of reckoning,” charging the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) to prioritize genuine reconciliation and internal democracy.

Ikpeazu, who served as Chairman of the Convention Planning and Organizing Committee, made the call in his opening speech at the party’s 10th elective national convention held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The convention, themed “Inclusiveness, Unity, and Renewal,” marked the first time the PDP would elect new national officers since October 2021.

“The duty of genuine reconciliation within our party is not optional; it is fundamental. Your work begins immediately,” Ikpeazu told the incoming NWC. “You must act decisively to heal divisions, rebuild trust, restore discipline, and strengthen internal democracy.”

Ikpeazu acknowledged the turbulence the party had faced since the last convention in 2021, noting that internal leadership strains culminated in the December 2025 decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC) to constitute a caretaker committee in the interest of stability.

He also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing him as a “formidable pillar of strength” who ensured the PDP did not drift into oblivion.

“From 2015 to date, he has remained a formidable pillar of strength, investing his time, energy, and resources in sustaining the party as a credible platform of hope for millions of Nigerians,” Ikpeazu said. “Such consistency of purpose, unwavering loyalty, and exemplary leadership have, without doubt, earned him a place of prominence as the national leader of the party.”

The former governor also praised other party leaders, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, for their roles in reconciliation efforts.

Ikpeazu urged delegates to approach the convention as a sacred duty, emphasizing that the outcome would determine whether the PDP could rise above recent challenges and reclaim its position as Nigeria’s leading political platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
