No Extension, Says INEC as Parties Race to Resolve Primaries Amid Growing Chaos

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed June 30, 2026, as the deadline for all political parties to submit the names of their candidates for the 2027 general elections, throwing many parties into further disarray amid unresolved primary disputes.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education, Sam Olumekun, the deadline is firm and non-negotiable.

“Parties are expected to upload the list of their nominated candidates via the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal by 11:59 pm on June 30, 2026. No extension will be granted,” the statement read.

The announcement has worsened post-primary chaos, particularly for the opposition Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which is grappling with multiple lawsuits, factional crises, and rejected primary results across several states.

The ruling APC is also facing internal grievances in some senatorial districts, though party officials have expressed confidence in meeting the deadline.

Political analysts warn that parties that fail to submit valid candidate lists risk being excluded from the ballot. INEC has advised aggrieved aspirants to seek legal redress but insisted that the timeline remains unchanged.
