Tragedy struck Iluke Bunu community in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday as bandits attacked Government Secondary School, killing three persons, including the vice principal and a six-year-old child .
The armed bandits, operating on about 40 motorcycles, invaded the school around 10:00 a.m. while students were writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English Language paper .
According to the Kogi State Police Command, the attackers intended to abduct students and residents. A distress call triggered a joint security response involving police, military personnel, and local vigilantes, who engaged the bandits in a fierce gun duel and forced them to flee .
The victims were identified as Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr. Sunday Jacob Alhassan, aged 70; and Sunday Ayele, a six-year-old boy .
Police confirmed that one of the attackers was neutralised during the exchange, while a security operative sustained gunshot injuries . The Kogi State Government praised security forces for preventing a potential mass abduction, stating that all students were rescued unharmed .
The Commissioner of Police has ordered sustained bush-combing operations to apprehend fleeing suspects .
