SA Politician Blames Nigerians for ‘Zombies in Our Streets’ — Nigerians Demand Apology

A South African politician who identified herself as the president of the Inizwe Nathi Party has sparked widespread outrage after telling Nigerians being repatriated from the country that “Nigerians are horrible” .

Thabile Sibeko made the comments while speaking to newsmen at the airport in South Africa as the first batch of 262 Nigerians — mostly women and children — prepared to board a repatriation flight to Lagos following escalating anti-immigrant violence .

“I’m here to bid farewell to Nigeria, to make sure that they are leaving our country and to say to them bye-bye, Nigeria. Thank you for all you contributed to our country. We did not appreciate the wrongs that you have done,” Sibeko said .

She alleged that Nigerians were responsible for drug-related problems in South Africa, claiming: “Today we’ve got zombies in our streets as our children because of them, and that has cut deep in our hearts and that has made us to resent them” .

She drew a distinction between Nigerians and other foreign nationals, telling others “we say thank you for being here,” while insisting that “Nigeria is horrible, these people are horrible” .

The comments have ignited fresh outrage, coming amid Nigeria’s ongoing diplomatic tensions with South Africa over the treatment of its citizens .
