The National Industrial Court of Nigeria, sitting in Abuja, has ordered the Federal Government and the Registrar of Trade Unions to register the newly formed National Association of Non-Teaching Staff of Nigerian Universities (NANTS) as a trade union .
Justice Osatohanmwen Obaseki-Osaghae, in her judgment, declared that the refusal of the Registrar of Trade Unions and the Minister of Labour and Employment to register NANTS was wrongful . The court orders FG to register NANTS as new varsity workers’ union, directing the defendants to issue the certificate of registration forthwith.
The court also issued a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from denying the claimant registration under the Trade Unions Act.
The varsity workers, through comrade Niyi Akinnibi, had filed suit number NICN/ABJ/345/2023 seeking the court’s intervention after the government refused to register their union .
It was gathered that members of the new union pulled out of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) to register NANTS with branches in all state and federal universities across the country .
