Drone Strike Hits Moscow Oil Refinery, Fire Erupts

A Ukrainian drone struck a major oil refinery in Moscow on Tuesday, triggering a fire and causing significant damage to the facility.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that a drone hit a facility at the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district, southeast of the capital. Emergency services were deployed to the scene.

The drone strike hit the Moscow oil refinery as part of one of the largest drone barrages targeting the Russian capital this year. Russian air defenses reportedly intercepted dozens of drones, but the attack successfully breached defenses.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Kyiv was behind the strike, calling it “a just response to Russian strikes.” The refinery, owned by Gazprom, supplies up to 40% of the Moscow region’s fuel needs. Zelensky said the attack, coinciding with the G7 summit in France, demonstrates Ukraine’s expanding long-range capabilities.

Russian authorities reported 172 Ukrainian drones were downed across multiple regions. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
