The Kano State Police Command has foiled a violent thuggery attack and arrested six suspects following a clash between rival ‘Yan Daba groups in the Gyadi-Gyadi area of the state .
The command said its swift intervention restored calm and prevented a further breakdown of law and order.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the incident occurred at about 1:20pm after police received a distress call that suspected thugs had mobilised for a clash in the Gyadi-Gyadi Quarters .
Patrol teams were immediately deployed to the scene, where officers met the hoodlums engaged in a violent confrontation. The police said an ambulance was vandalised during the clash, while attempts were also made to attack other locations .
“The thugs were promptly confronted by the police. However, they later regrouped and attacked police officers with dangerous weapons and stones,” the statement read .
The police said operatives professionally repelled the attack, forcing the suspects to flee toward Farm Centre Market, where they allegedly attempted to break into shops and loot property. Reinforcement teams were subsequently mobilised to the market, where the suspects were dispersed and six persons arrested .
The state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, commended officers of the Farm Centre Division and reinforcement teams for their “gallantry, restraint and professionalism.”
“Their swift response prevented further breakdown of law and order and loss of property,” Bakori said .
He warned that the command would not tolerate any form of thuggery, ‘Yan Daba activities or disturbance of public peace in Kano State. The commissioner also advised parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against involvement in criminal activities .
The command said investigation is ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects and identify the sponsors of the clash .
