AKURE, NIGERIA — The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 17-year-old girl for allegedly stabbing her 16-year-old friend to death following a disagreement in Akure, the state capital.
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday at about 5:00 p.m. in the Oke Aro area of Akure. The suspect, identified as Happiness Edet, and the deceased, Maryam Sanni, both residents of the community, reportedly engaged in a heated argument that escalated into a physical confrontation.
According to the police, during the altercation, Happiness allegedly used a knife to stab Maryam in the neck. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty.
The police spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday, said the suspect was immediately arrested following the report of the incident .
“The command received a report of an incident that happened at about 1700hrs of Thursday, 12/03/2026 at Oke Aro, Akure. It was reported that one Happiness Edet ‘f’ 17 years and one Maryam Sanni ‘f’ 16 years had a disagreement and during the process, Happiness used a knife to stab Maryam in her neck,” the statement read.
The police spokesperson added that the Commissioner of Police, Adeniyi Adekunle, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Odunlami-Omisanya also used the opportunity to warn members of the public, particularly youths, against resorting to violence when resolving disputes. “Members of the public, especially the youths are advised that disagreement does not warrant maiming or killing of fellow human beings. Seek alternative measures to resolve disputes,” she advised .
The incident has left residents of the Oke Aro community in shock, with many calling for peaceful conflict resolution among young people.
