Kylian Mbappe announced his arrival at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in breathtaking fashion, scoring twice to lead France to a 3-1 victory over Senegal and shatter two major records in the process.
The French captain, playing in his third World Cup, surpassed Olivier Giroud to become France’s all-time men’s top scorer with 58 international goals. He also moved past Lionel Messi and Pele on the World Cup all-time scoring chart, reaching 14 goals to tie Gerd Muller for third place.
Senegal started brightly, with Nicolas Jackson hitting the post and Ismaila Sarr blazing over in the first half. But France took control after the break when Mbappe guided Michael Olise’s pass into the net in the 66th minute. Substitute Bradley Barcola doubled the lead in the 82nd minute before Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal in stoppage time.
But Mbappe had the final word, unleashing a stunning 30-yard strike to seal the victory and etch his name further into football history. At just 27, he now sits only behind Ronaldo (15) and Miroslav Klose (16) on the World Cup goalscoring list.
