Ikwuano LG Chairman’s N3.1bn Defamation Suit Against Journalist Stalls in Court

The defamation suit filed by Ikwuano Local Government Chairman, Anthony Nwaubani, against journalist Tony Icheku and two others suffered an early adjournment at the Abia State High Court, Ikwuano Division .

The suit stems from a report titled “Ikwuano LG Boss, Nwaubani Snobs Inquiries on Financial Impropriety, Poor Leadership Allegations,” published by Icheku, which allegedly linked Nwaubani to the siphoning of N19 million from the local government’s coffers . Nwaubani is seeking N3.1 billion in damages .

At Tuesday’s hearing, Nwaubani’s counsel sought a substituted service order for the two other defendants, a request that was granted. The matter was adjourned indefinitely pending service .

Meanwhile, Nwaubani has refused to respond to a Freedom of Information request seeking documents on the two-storey building project at Isiala and revenue from Ndioro and Ariam-Usaka markets . The FOI request was made in May, but its seven-day window has elapsed without a reply .

Separately, a consortium of journalists has applied for a judicial review of Nwaubani’s refusal, seeking an Order of Mandamus to compel compliance .
