No Going Back’: Wike Camp Insists PDP Convention Will Hold Despite Crisis

ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has declared that its planned national convention will proceed as scheduled, insisting that ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party will not derail the March 29-30 gathering .

Speaking at a pre-convention press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, firmly stated that the convention remains sacrosanct despite internal tensions .

“Reconciliation is an ongoing thing, and it cannot in any way prevent the caretaker committee from carrying out the convention,” Mohammed said . He recalled that the Turaki group had been informed at the last NEC meeting that “two things remain sacrosanct: the existence of this caretaker committee and the conduct of this National Convention” .

The faction has released a detailed timetable leading to the convention, scheduled to hold at the Velodrome Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja . Activities commence Thursday with the publication of convention committee members, followed by inaugurations on Saturday .

A zoning committee will meet March 22 to allocate positions across geopolitical zones, while an emergency NEC meeting holds March 23 at the Minister’s Lodge in Life Camp, Abuja . Nomination forms will be sold March 23-25, with appeals from screening heard March 26 .

A pre-convention cocktail is planned for March 28 at the Minister’s Lodge before the main event .

Mohammed emphasised that the Independent National Electoral Commission has been duly notified and has monitored all ward, local government, and state congresses . The faction has concluded state congresses following a court ruling, with only South-East and North-West zonal congresses remaining this Saturday .

The declaration comes as the Wike-backed faction consolidates control across several states, including Plateau, Ebonyi, and Lagos, where parallel congresses produced new executives this week . However, the Turaki-backed faction has dismissed these exercises, maintaining that its own leadership remains valid until 2028 .

Despite the hardening positions, Mohammed maintained the faction remains “open for reconciliation” even as it presses forward with convention preparations .
