The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has disputed police claims regarding suspects arrested in a recent kidnapping case in Benue State, insisting the individuals were innocent travellers.
MACBAN’s National Secretary, Baba Othman Ngelzarma, stated on Tuesday that the arrested men were herders moving with their cattle through the state when security operatives apprehended them. He denied any involvement in criminal activity and demanded a fair investigation.
The Benue State Police Command had earlier paraded the suspects, linking them to a series of abductions along the Makurdi-Lafia highway. Commissioner of Police Steve Yabanet said weapons and ransom money were recovered from the men.
However, MACBAN accused security agencies of profiling Fulani herders, arguing that movement with livestock does not constitute evidence of kidnapping. The association threatened legal action if the suspects are not released or charged properly.
The disagreement highlights ongoing tensions between herder associations and security forces in the Middle Belt, where farmer-herder conflicts and kidnapping have surged in recent years.
Human rights observers have called for transparent prosecution to ensure justice for victims while protecting the rights of the accused.
