Residents of FESTAC Town, Lagos, have staged a peaceful protest over the alleged sale of public facilities within the federal housing estate to private developers.
Protesters gathered at the estate’s main entrance on Tuesday, carrying placards and chanting slogans against what they described as the systematic privatization of communal amenities. They accused estate management of selling off parks, recreational centers, and open spaces without community consultation.
Community leader Chief Emeka Okafor said the sales violate the original master plan of the estate, which was designed to serve low and middle-income families. He warned that the loss of green spaces and recreational areas would degrade living standards for thousands of residents.
The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has yet to issue an official response to the allegations. However, some residents claim they have seen construction equipment and private security guards deployed to previously public areas.
Lagos State government officials have urged calm, promising to investigate the claims and mediate between residents and the FHA.
FESTAC Town, established in 1977, remains one of Nigeria’s most iconic federal housing estates.
