U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he will not use military force to take control of Greenland but reiterated his belief that the United States should have “ownership” of the autonomous Danish territory.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump addressed longstanding speculation about his interest in Greenland, saying, “We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force… but I won’t do that.” He emphasized that while the U.S. could be “unstoppable,” he had no intention of using force.
Greenland, a vast Arctic island with significant strategic and mineral resources, remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump’s remarks revisit a topic from his presidency, when he publicly floated the idea of purchasing Greenland, an offer Denmark firmly rejected.
The statement was made during a special address at the annual summit, drawing global attention to U.S. geopolitical interests in the Arctic region.
