Kano Emirship Crisis Faces New Twist After Gov Yusuf’s Defection

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has introduced fresh political dynamics into Kano’s long-running emirship crisis.

The state has been split between two royal claimants—Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II at Gidan Rumfa Palace and Emir Aminu Ado Bayero at Nassarawa Palace—each backed by rival political forces.

Yusuf’s move aligns him with former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, figures seen as supportive of Bayero, while distancing him from his former godfather Rabiu Kwankwaso, who backed Sanusi’s reinstatement.

While the governor insists Sanusi remains Emir, Bayero’s camp rejects out-of-court settlement, insisting the matter be decided by the Supreme Court. Legal experts note that settlement remains possible anytime before judgment.

Whether Yusuf’s defection will lead to resolution or deeper complication remains uncertain as legal, political, and traditional interests continue to intersect.
