The National Economic Council has approved N83.2 billion for flood preparedness and climate emergency interventions across Nigeria.
The approval, announced at the Council’s meeting on Thursday, aims to strengthen national response capacity ahead of the peak rainy season, which has historically triggered devastating floods in multiple states.
The funds will support early warning systems, emergency relief stockpiling, evacuation infrastructure, and post-disaster recovery operations. State governments are expected to access the allocation through coordinated federal-state disaster management frameworks.
The intervention follows recent meteorological forecasts predicting above-average rainfall and heightened flood risks in riverine and coastal communities. Analysts say the approval signals improved fiscal planning for climate adaptation, though implementation timelines remain critical.
The NEC also reviewed ongoing disaster risk reduction strategies and urged accelerated disbursement to vulnerable regions before flood peaks.
