UMUAHIA – Senator Augustine Akobundu, representing Abia Central Senatorial District, has presented education grants to 217 students studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria as part of efforts to support indigent students and promote access to quality education.
The beneficiaries include 113 students of the National Teachers Institute (NTI) and 114 students from other tertiary institutions. The presentation ceremony, held at Golden Olive Hotel, Umuahia, brought together students, education stakeholders, political leaders and beneficiaries of the senator’s empowerment programmes.
Speaking at the event, Senator Akobundu described the grants as an investment in the future of Abia Central, saying education remains the foundation for sustainable development. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that no deserving student is denied education because of financial hardship.
The senator also highlighted previous initiatives, including scholarships for NTI students, digital skills training, robotics and artificial intelligence programmes, and empowerment schemes for women and youths.
Chairman of the Planning Committee, Stanley Nwabuisi, said beneficiaries emerged through a transparent application and screening process, assuring participants that the programme would continue.
Several speakers, including education stakeholders and community leaders, commended the initiative, describing it as a long-term investment in human capital development. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude, saying the grants would ease their financial burden and encourage them to pursue academic excellence.
