The scheduled arraignment of Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-styled Director-General of the alleged Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), was stalled on Tuesday after he failed to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Adeyemi was expected to take his plea before Justice Mohammed Umar on an eight-count charge bordering on alleged forgery, fraud, and impersonation. The charges stem from allegations that he falsely presented himself as the head of a government agency authorities say does not exist.
The case had earlier been adjourned after Adeyemi was reported to be ill. Ahead of the latest hearing, he reportedly claimed that security concerns and alleged threats to his life prevented him from appearing in court, while calling for an independent investigation into the controversy.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the PFIPC controversy has attracted nationwide attention following allegations that forged government documents were used to create the impression that the organisation was an official federal agency. The Presidency has maintained that the council is non-existent, while President Bola Tinubu has directed relevant agencies to investigate the matter. The allegations against Adeyemi remain before the court, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
