The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to deploy National Identification Number (NIN) verification as part of measures to curb duplicate voter registration and strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the commission said integrating NIN verification into voter registration would help identify multiple registrations by the same individual, improve the accuracy of the national voter register, and enhance the integrity of future elections.
According to INEC, the initiative forms part of ongoing electoral reforms aimed at ensuring that every eligible Nigerian is registered only once while reducing cases of identity fraud and other irregularities. The commission also assured Nigerians that the process would comply with relevant data protection and privacy regulations.
INEC encouraged eligible citizens to participate in voter registration using genuine personal information and warned against attempts to register more than once, stressing that duplicate registration remains an electoral offence under Nigerian law.
