INEC Chairman Vows to End Era of Pre-Election Court Battles

The new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has declared that the era of endless pre-election court battles is over. He stated that his primary goal is to dismantle the culture of “litigation by other means” that has plagued Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking at a conference of law teachers, Amupitan expressed concern over the more than 1,000 pre-election cases filed before the 2023 general elections. He asserted that this trend is unhealthy for the nation’s democratic process.

CDA News gathered that the INEC boss emphasized that the solution lies in strict adherence to the law by political parties. He urged parties to obey their own constitutions, the Electoral Act, and the Nigerian Constitution to reduce legal disputes.

Amupitan called on the National Assembly to strengthen electoral laws, noting that credible elections depend on robust legal frameworks and internal party democracy. He also challenged the academic community to see law as a tool for reform and justice.
