US-Based Cleric Demands Nnamdi Kanu’s Release, Citing Illegal Abduction

A United States-based Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Augustine Odimmegwa, has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a strong statement, Fr. Odimmegwa, Coordinator of the non-profit Rising Sun, insisted that Kanu’s continued detention is a “shameful abuse of justice.” He argued that the court lacks the jurisdiction to try Kanu because he was “abducted, not extradited” from Kenya in 2021.

“The law is clear — when a man is taken illegally from another country, no court in Nigeria has any right to try him,” the cleric stated.

He further noted that the Court of Appeal had already discharged Kanu in 2022 due to the illegal nature of his rendition. Fr. Odimmegwa’s demand adds to growing calls from rights groups and protesters for the government to obey the court ruling and release the IPOB leader.
