ABUJA – For the fourth consecutive time, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has refused to open his defence in his ongoing terrorism trial.
At a resumed hearing on Tuesday, Kanu, who is representing himself, insisted before the Federal High Court in Abuja that he has “no case to answer.” He argued that without a valid charge before the court, there was no legal basis for him to defend himself and demanded immediate release from DSS custody.
The prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, urged the court not to indulge the defendant further, describing his actions as a delay tactic.
In a short ruling, trial Justice James Omotosho dismissed the prosecution’s objection to Kanu’s filed documents, acknowledging that the defendant is not a legal professional. The judge granted Kanu a further opportunity to consult with a lawyer.
However, Justice Omotosho issued a firm warning, hinting that the court would foreclose Kanu’s right to defend himself if he fails to do so at the next sitting. The case has been adjourned till Wednesday.
