Southern and Middle Belt leaders have renewed their advocacy for the establishment of state police, insisting that governors should have operational control over Commissioners of Police (CPs) to strengthen security across the country.
CDA News Nigeria independently verified that the leaders made the call while discussing the need for reforms in Nigeria’s policing structure. CDA News Nigeria gathered the news from the report.
According to the leaders, state police governors control CPs is necessary to ensure faster responses to security threats, improve intelligence gathering and enhance accountability at the state level. They argued that governors, as chief security officers of their states, should have the authority to direct police operations during emergencies.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the proponents maintained that the current centrally controlled policing system has limitations in addressing local security challenges, especially in communities affected by banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
While supporting constitutional safeguards against abuse, the leaders urged the National Assembly and other stakeholders to expedite constitutional amendments that would pave the way for the creation of state police.
The renewed demand comes as debates continue over the best approach to improving internal security and strengthening law enforcement across Nigeria.
