ABUJA — The Presidency and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have engaged in a fresh war of words over the worsening security situation and reported killings across Nigeria.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Atiku criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu over reports that 5,091 Nigerians were killed in violent incidents within three months.
Atiku described the reported death toll as evidence of what he called serious security failures under the Tinubu administration. He also linked the situation to what he described as wasteful government spending and inadequate funding for security agencies.
The former vice president argued that every Nigerian killed by terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes represents a failure by the state to protect its citizens.
However, the Presidency rejected Atiku’s criticism and challenged his interpretation of the security situation, resulting in a fresh exchange between both sides.
The latest disagreement comes amid renewed concerns over attacks and killings in parts of the country, with Atiku having previously condemned killings in Southern Kaduna and other affected areas.
The political exchange is expected to keep security and the government’s handling of insecurity at the centre of national debate as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
