The Osun State Police Command has confirmed that the State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mr Moyowa Adejoorin, has regained his freedom following his arrest in connection with a shooting incident that rocked an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ilesa at the weekend.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, left four persons with gunshot injuries, among them a teenager identified as Tobi Ilesanmi, throwing the rally into confusion and drawing swift police intervention.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, operatives moved quickly to the scene once news of the shooting broke, cordoning off the area to preserve evidence. Officers reportedly recovered several exhibits linked to the shooting, including expended cartridges and caps belonging to Amotekun operatives, the South-West regional security outfit.
Ojelabi disclosed that Adejoorin’s vehicle was among those halted at the scene, and that an Amotekun operative allegedly connected to the shooting was found with him at the time. The commissioner was subsequently taken into custody at the command headquarters, where he was held for questioning as investigators worked to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the development took an unexpected turn on Sunday when a video began circulating on social media showing Adejoorin walking out of the police command, sparking speculation over his status in the investigation.
Reacting to enquiries, Ojelabi confirmed that the commissioner had indeed regained his freedom, explaining that he was released on bail. He was, however, unable to speak on the fate of the Amotekun personnel who was picked up alongside Adejoorin, noting that the matter concerning that operative remained unresolved. He assured that clarification on that aspect of the case would follow as investigations progress.
The incident has stirred concern in Osun’s political circles, coming amid heightened tension ahead of political jostling in the state, and has again put a spotlight on the conduct of security operatives, including Amotekun personnel, at partisan political gatherings. Residents of Ilesa and observers of the state’s security situation are awaiting further word from the police command on the outcome of the investigation, particularly regarding accountability for the shooting and the condition of the injured victims, including young Tobi Ilesanmi.
