ABUJA — Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has directed Federal Controllers of Works across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to intensify supervision of road and bridge projects, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and ensure Nigerians are adequately informed about ongoing infrastructure interventions .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Minister gave the charge on Tuesday during a strategic interaction with the Controllers at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Abuja. He emphasised that their responsibilities extend beyond routine administrative duties, as they serve as the Ministry’s representatives at the sub-national level .
CDA News Nigeria reports that Umahi urged the Controllers to take greater ownership of projects under their jurisdiction and to establish stronger working relationships with state governments, contractors, traditional institutions, community groups, and the media. He stressed that effective communication must complement effective project delivery, noting that road users and citizens should have access to clear and factual information on projects, including their locations, scope, implementation status and expected benefits .
The Minister charged the Controllers to remain physically present at project sites, identify construction challenges early, and ensure contractors adhere to approved specifications and quality standards. “Go hard on the contractors. Go straight to the site, not sit in the office. The sites need your extra attention to ensure quality and timely delivery,” Umahi directed .
He also called for stronger collaboration between Federal Controllers, Zonal and Coordinating Directors to improve decision-making on project-related issues. In his remarks, Permanent Secretary Rafiu Adeladan commended the Minister’s commitment to infrastructure delivery and urged the Controllers to remain dedicated to their responsibilities .
