PORT HARCOURT — A public appeal has been issued to Shell, SPDC, Renaissance, and SNCPFA, demanding the immediate reinstatement of medical benefits for retired staff spouse, Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, Enrollee No. RTD-143637-A, following her reported removal from the pensioner medical scheme after 35 years of coverage.
The appeal was made by an advocate under the Prof Mercy Ade-Davies International Foundation (PMADIF), Joy Klinton Wellington, who warned the companies: “Don’t use and dump a sickle cell warrior!”
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the professor, a former presidential candidate and a woman of over four decades in academia, was reportedly informed of the “immediate cessation” of her medical benefits via email, following a 13-day hospital admission at the SPDC/Renaissance facility in Port Harcourt.
The withdrawal has been met with widespread condemnation, with a religious body, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Ecclesiastical Affairs, stating that the dispute “potentially raises broader questions concerning retirement benefits, spousal protection, medical security and administrative fairness.”
The group has also expressed solidarity with the professor and noted that she has indicated an intention to pursue a N15 billion legal claim if the alleged deregistration is established to be unlawful and if appropriate remedies are not provided .
CDA News Nigeria reports that the demand letter argues that the decision to withdraw retiree medical benefits is not merely a policy change but has tangible consequences for thousands of families.
“It is the difference between a mother who sleeps well at night, and a mother who lies awake wondering if she can afford her next hospital visit,” the statement read .
The advocate, who described being present when the professor was ordered out of the hospital, warned, “Don’t turn my healthy mummy into a sick patient,” and asked the multinational companies to instead move the professor under their corporate responsibility .
The professor has stated, “They want to kill me. Please, don’t kill me,” while the advocate declared the matter a fight for pensioner dignity, stating: “Retirement should not be a cliff” .
