ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia has formally submitted its bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2028, which would mark the country’s first time hosting the continental tournament in more than half a century .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Ethiopian Football Federation confirmed its bid in a post on X late Monday, stating it had submitted the required documents to the Confederation of African Football . The country last hosted the tournament in 1976.

CDA News Nigeria reports that Ethiopia, with the second-largest population in Africa at approximately 130 million people, has its capital Addis Ababa serving as the headquarters of the African Union. The city also holds the distinction of being the highest capital in Africa at 2,300 metres above sea level .

However, the bid faces significant obstacles, including ongoing insurgencies in the country’s two most populous states, Amhara and Oromia, as well as threats of renewed civil war between the federal government and the northern Tigray region . The Ethiopian national team currently ranks 143rd out of 211 by FIFA and last played in the AFCON tournament in 2022, where they were eliminated in the group stage .

Despite the challenges, the federation said the bid “reaffirms the nation’s full readiness to host Africa’s biggest footballing event” .
