The Governor clarified that the tenure of local government officials will not end in November 2026, following a prior amendment by the State House of Assembly.
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has clarified that the tenure of the current Chairmen and Councillors in the 17 Local Government Areas of the State will end in 2028, not in November 2026 as speculated . Governor Otti made this explanation during his media chat with Abia people, reacting to the trending speculation regarding the fate of the executive chairmen and their councillors .
According to the Governor, the former system, where the tenure of elected local government executives lasted for two years, was amended through an Act of the Abia State Parliament before the elections . “Before the election, we went to the House of Assembly to amend that law and the House of Assembly gave the local government Mayor’s and their Councillors four years and that was even before the election,” Governor Otti stated .
He dismissed speculation about the tenure of the local government chairmen and their councillors, noting that the law cannot be applied retrospectively, having been amended before the November 2, 2024 chairmanship and councillorship polls . This move has been lauded by some as a significant step towards strengthening grassroots governance and ensuring stability and continuity in local government administration . The tenure extension follows the Abia State House of Assembly’s approval to change the law, increasing the term from two to four years, allowing chairmen more time to plan and implement community projects .
