OPay Dismisses Viral Shutdown Rumour, Warns Against Fake Publication

The company has urged customers to disregard the false report and warned that spreading such misinformation could attract legal consequences.

OPay Digital Services, a leading fintech company in Nigeria, has dismissed as false, malicious, and misleading a viral social media publication claiming that the company would shut down its operations for an indefinite break starting September 1, 2026 . The fabricated notice, which gained significant traction online, had urged customers to withdraw or transfer their funds from the platform .

The company swiftly refuted the claim through a post on its official social media pages, stating: “OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!” . OPay urged the public to scrutinise the viral post for inconsistencies, noting that authentic communications are easily identifiable. “Take a closer look at the viral post and you’ll spot the red flags,” the company said, encouraging users to verify before sharing .

The Vice President, Public and Government Affairs, Dr. Maxwell Loko, also warned that such deliberate misinformation is designed to cause panic and erode confidence in financial institutions, and could attract legal repercussions for those who spread it . This incident is part of a recurring trend of false shutdown rumours targeting fintech platforms, raising concerns about the use of fabricated content to potentially undermine market stability .
