Nwabali Takes Dig at Morocco Over AFCON Towel Controversy

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has posted a cryptic message seemingly aimed at Morocco following controversy over the host nation’s conduct during the just-concluded AFCON 2025 tournament.

On his Instagram story, Nwabali wrote, “Make una use all my towels una carry wipe una tears,” in apparent reference to allegations that Moroccan ball boys and officials repeatedly removed goalkeepers’ towels during matches to unsettle opponents.

Videos from the final between Senegal and Morocco showed ball boys preventing Senegal’s towel handler from passing towels to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, while defender Achraf Hakimi was seen throwing a Senegal towel over an advertising board.

Similar incidents were reported during Nigeria’s semi-final clash with Morocco, where Nwabali was filmed repeatedly leaving his goal area to retrieve towels from the Nigerian bench.

The controversy has sparked criticism online despite Morocco being awarded the tournament’s Fair Play Award.
