A major political shift is unfolding in Ukwa West Local Government Area as members of the Labour Party have defected in large numbers to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors, drawn from several wards across the council area, were officially received in Asa by the APC State Chairman, Chijioke Chukwu, who described the development as a significant boost to the party’s growing influence in Abia State.
Addressing the new members, Chukwu assured them of equal opportunities within the party, stressing the importance of unity, commitment, and grassroots mobilization. He emphasized that the APC remains focused on winning future elections and taking over leadership in the state.
“There is no discrimination in APC. What we require is dedication and collective effort to achieve our political goals,” he stated.
The APC chairman also expressed confidence that the party is well-positioned to secure victories across Abia, urging the defectors to actively participate in strengthening party structures at the polling unit level.
Political observers note that the mass defection could significantly alter the balance of power in the area, weakening the Labour Party’s foothold while strengthening the APC’s grassroots presence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development is widely seen as part of a broader realignment within Abia politics, as parties intensify strategies to gain dominance in key local government areas.
