US Strikes Iran for First Time in a Month as Tehran Vows Retaliation

The US military attacked Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, breaking a month-long lull in hostilities and prompting Iran to launch missiles at US bases in Jordan.

The United States carried out its first strikes on Iran in over a month on Sunday, targeting two rocket launchers on Larak Island in the strategic Strait of Hormuz . US Central Command said the strikes were “limited, precise action” against Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps forces observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the strait .

The attack killed two people and injured two others, according to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which immediately vowed “response and punishment” . Hours later, Iran responded by striking US military bases in Jordan, including the King Hussein and al-Azraq bases, according to Iranian state media .

Iran also claimed to have targeted an air base in the UAE with drones, though UAE authorities said the report was “unfounded” while confirming they shot down a drone .

The strikes represent a significant escalation after weeks of relative calm. US President Donald Trump had paused a renewed military campaign in late July, shifting focus to economic warfare and sanctions . However, tensions over the Strait of Hormuz—a critical waterway through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil previously passed—remained high, with Iran continuing to restrict shipping traffic .

Trump reiterated that the Strait’s reopening did not mean military action was over. “They are in deep trouble, they have very little capacity, the Strait of Hormuz is open, it doesn’t mean we finished with the military,” he said .
