A suit filed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar challenging President Bola Tinubu’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election has suffered a setback after a Federal High Court in Abuja declined jurisdiction . The case, brought under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/504/2026, was filed on May 4, 2026, seeking to bar Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from participating in the 2027 election .
The plaintiffs, which included the Incorporated Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a civil society group, the Social Democratic Concerned Citizens, argued that Shettima’s nomination as vice-presidential candidate was unconstitutional because his earlier nomination as the party’s candidate for the Borno Central Senatorial election remained valid . They also raised questions about Tinubu’s academic records .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling, held that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit. The judge struck out the case on the grounds that the plaintiffs lacked locus standi to file the action . This decision represents a significant legal hurdle for Atiku’s challenge, which sought to prevent Tinubu and Shettima from contesting the 2027 presidential election .
