ABSU Lecturer Prof. Nnamdi Nwabueze Recalled After Suspension Over Salary Remarks

…University Management Lifts Suspension Following ASUU Ultimatum

The management of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has officially recalled Professor Nnamdi Nwabueze of the Department of Economics following his suspension over social media comments comparing lecturers’ salaries to tricycle operators’ earnings.

CDA News Nigeria reports that Professor Nwabueze was suspended on August 12, 2026, after posting on Facebook that professors at ABSU earn less than ₦400,000 monthly, while commercial tricycle riders allegedly earn over ₦450,000 . The university’s Deputy Registrar, Chijioke Nwogu, stated at the time that the post was “inimical to the interests of the university and uncomplimentary to the Visitor of the university” .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the suspension triggered widespread reactions, with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declaring a strike and demanding the professor’s immediate recall. The union gave the university management until September 4, 2026, to lift the suspension or face a resumed industrial action . ASUU Chairman, Dr. Chidi Mbah, confirmed that the lecturer’s claims were accurate, noting that some lecturers were owed salaries spanning up to 44 months .

The recall follows intense pressure from ASUU, civil society groups, and opposition parties, including the APC and PDP, who condemned the suspension as an assault on freedom of expression . The APC had called the suspension “the height of intolerance by a government that claims to uphold the tenets of democracy” .
