President Bola Tinubu has called for a major reform of the United Nations Security Council, insisting that Africa must have a permanent voice in global decision-making.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Tinubu made the call in an address delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, with Nigeria demanding at least two permanent seats for Africa, complete with veto power for as long as the veto remains in place, alongside five non-permanent seats.
According to Tinubu, “the world of 2026 cannot remain captive to the distribution of power in 1945,” stressing that Africa cannot continue featuring prominently on the UN agenda while remaining absent from permanent Security Council membership.
The President also called for an immediate end to global conflicts, urging nations to return to dialogue, international law and the principles of the UN Charter. On climate change, he reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and a fair energy transition, noting that Africa contributes less than four percent of global emissions yet faces disproportionate climate impacts.
Tinubu further demanded reforms to the global financial system, including greater access to concessional financing and debt arrangements that account for the development needs of poorer countries. He disclosed that Nigeria is targeting net-zero emissions by 2060 while expanding energy access, digital infrastructure and technology-driven economic opportunities.
He stressed that lasting solutions to terrorism and insecurity require not only military action but also education, economic opportunities, accountable governance and respect for human rights, concluding that a reformed, inclusive UN remains essential to global peace and sustainability.
