Umuahia, Abia State — Supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have argued that the Federal Government has committed significant resources to Nigeria’s agricultural sector through various policies and intervention programmes under the Renewed Hope Agenda, while urging the Abia State Government to take fuller advantage of the opportunities created.
CDA News Nigeria reports that advocates of the President’s agricultural policies point to initiatives aimed at improving food security, expanding agricultural financing, supporting fertilizer production and distribution, promoting mechanised farming, strengthening irrigation projects, improving extension services and empowering farmers across the country.
According to the proponents, these federal interventions are available to all states, including Abia, and should be complemented with aggressive state-level investments in commercial agriculture, agro-processing, mechanisation and value-chain development.
“The Federal Government has laid the foundation through major agricultural reforms and interventions. States should build on these initiatives by expanding food production, supporting farmers and attracting agro-industrial investments,” the proponents stated.
They argued that Abia State possesses fertile land, a large farming population and significant potential to become a major agricultural hub if greater investments are made in modern farming, processing facilities and rural infrastructure.
However, the Abia State Government has consistently maintained that it is implementing agricultural programmes aimed at boosting food production, supporting farmers and promoting economic development in the state.
The differing positions reflect the broader political debate over the pace and scale of agricultural development in Abia. Analysts say continued collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments will be essential to achieving sustainable food security and economic growth.
