President Bola Tinubu has demanded two permanent seats with veto powers for Africa on the United Nations Security Council, insisting the continent can no longer be excluded from top-level global decision-making.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Tinubu made the demand in an address delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, with Nigeria specifically calling for two permanent seats carrying full rights and veto power for as long as the veto system remains, alongside five non-permanent seats for the continent.
According to Tinubu, “the world of 2026 cannot remain captive to the distribution of power in 1945,” arguing that Africa’s prominent place on the UN agenda stands in stark contrast to its continued absence from permanent Security Council membership.
Beyond Security Council reform, the President called for an immediate end to global conflicts, urging a return to dialogue, international law and the principles of the UN Charter. He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Agreement, noting that Africa contributes less than four percent of global emissions yet bears disproportionate climate impacts, while pushing for fairer access to concessional financing and debt relief for developing nations.
Tinubu disclosed that Nigeria is targeting net-zero emissions by 2060, alongside expanding energy access and digital infrastructure, while stressing that tackling terrorism requires education, accountable governance and human rights alongside military action.
